about

There was a man - Michael - who busked on harp, late at night, and I would run into him from time to time on the way back from the pub. He would play his harp through a delay unit which gave it a really ethereal sound. It was always pretty deserted when I ran into him and I was usually fairly inebriated. The street lights and shadows seemed to create a surreal stage for him as he performed. I would usually stop to chat to him and give him some change - I don't remember what we talked about but the music was always very uplifting and I felt a spiritual quality that really appealed to me. The last time I saw him he talked about how he wanted to use his music to bring light into the world but that he knew the shadows were coming for him. I'd seen him a number of times before then but I don't know over what length of time. I don't know when I realised that I hadn't seen him again, and never have since, but he appears in my thoughts occasionally. This piece reminds me of those times.
